The position of crack initiation depends on the weld geometry and the loading. During the weld assessment LIMIT will check all assessment points in welds for possible failure modes, such as cracks through the weld throat, cracks at toe points or the weld root. These locations are marked with red circles in the chart below. LIMIT will present results for all theoretical possible failure positions. This way the engineer can easily decide which changes might be necessary.
Depending on the geometry the stresses in the weld throat can be different from the stresses on the top and bottom side of the shell. LIMIT uses the section forces and moments in order to calculate the stresses in the throat.
